Dec-K-Ing Deck Waterproofing Case Study: Vinyl Decking Installation
How we replaced a failed deck membrane on an Auckland home with a Dec-K-Ing vinyl decking system, restoring waterproof protection to the outdoor living area and the rooms below.
The Situation
The homeowner contacted us after noticing persistent water staining on the ceiling below their first-floor timber deck. The existing membrane — installed approximately 12 years earlier — had reached the end of its serviceable life. Inspection revealed the surface had become brittle and worn, with visible cracking along the seams and edges where it met the wall cladding.
Water had been tracking through failed seams and pooling on the plywood substrate, causing swelling in several sheets. The timber framing beneath showed early signs of moisture damage, though fortunately it had not progressed to the point of requiring structural repair. The situation needed prompt attention to prevent further damage to the deck structure and the rooms below.

Why Dec-K-Ing Was the Right Choice
After assessing the deck's structure, size and the homeowner's needs, we recommended a Dec-K-Ing vinyl decking system. Dec-K-Ing is a premium, UV-stabilised vinyl membrane that is mechanically fastened and heat-welded at every seam, creating a completely waterproof, anti-slip walking surface that can be used straight away.
For this project, Dec-K-Ing was ideal because it provides a durable, ready-to-walk-on finished surface in a single system — there is no need for a separate deck covering over the membrane. The welded seams remain watertight through Auckland's seasonal expansion and contraction cycles, and the anti-slip finish is well suited to an outdoor living area exposed to the weather.

Installation Process
The deck waterproofing replacement followed a systematic process to ensure a durable, leak-free result.
Deck Surface Removal
Removed the existing deck surface covering and stripped the failed membrane from the plywood substrate.
Substrate Inspection & Repair
Inspected all plywood sheets for moisture damage. Replaced two swollen sheets and confirmed the timber framing was structurally sound.
Surface Preparation
Sanded, cleaned and prepared the plywood surface to create a smooth, sound base for the Dec-K-Ing vinyl membrane.
Membrane Installation
Mechanically fastened the Dec-K-Ing vinyl decking sheet across the full deck area, working from the lowest drainage point to ensure correct water flow.
Seam & Edge Detailing
Heat-welded all seams and laps, and detailed the membrane upstands against the wall cladding with proper step-downs and edge terminations.
Penetration Sealing
Sealed all drainage outlets, post penetrations and other details to create a complete watertight envelope.
Final Inspection
Conducted a thorough quality inspection and water test to confirm leak-free performance before completing the project.
Result & Warranty
The completed deck waterproofing system restored full protection to the outdoor living area. The homeowner now has a fully waterproof, anti-slip deck with no water ingress to the rooms below. The Dec-K-Ing system is expected to provide 15–20+ years of reliable performance with basic maintenance.
All work was completed by Licensed Building Practitioners and comes with our workmanship guarantee. The Dec-K-Ing system carries a manufacturer-backed product warranty.
