The ultimate deck waterproofing system that combines a beautiful, comfortable walking surface with complete waterproof protection. Installed by Licensed Building Practitioner Matt Balkan across Auckland.
Dec-K-Ing is a premium vinyl decking membrane system specifically engineered for outdoor decks, balconies, roof terraces and walkways. Unlike traditional waterproofing membranes that require a separate walking surface on top, Dec-K-Ing is the walking surface — combining complete waterproof protection with an attractive, comfortable and slip-resistant finish in a single product.
The system consists of heavy-duty PVC vinyl sheets that are mechanically fastened to the plywood substrate and heat-welded at every seam. This heat-welding process fuses the vinyl sheets together at a molecular level, creating a completely seamless, watertight barrier across the entire deck surface. There are no adhesive joints to fail, no grout lines to crack, and no gaps for water to penetrate.
In Auckland, where decks and balconies are exposed to UV radiation, salt air, and over 1,200mm of annual rainfall, Dec-K-Ing provides a reliable long-term solution. The vinyl is UV-stabilised to resist fading and degradation, while the embossed anti-slip texture ensures safe footing even during heavy rain. It's particularly popular for elevated decks where water penetration to the rooms below would cause significant damage.
Professional installation by a Licensed Building Practitioner ensures your Dec-K-Ing system performs for decades
The plywood deck is inspected for structural integrity. Any damaged or rotten timber is replaced. The surface is cleaned, levelled and primed to ensure proper adhesion and drainage falls.
Dec-K-Ing vinyl sheets are precision-cut to fit the deck layout, accounting for all penetrations, upstands, drainage outlets and edge details. Every piece is custom-fitted on site.
The vinyl sheets are heat-welded together using specialist equipment at precisely controlled temperatures. This fuses the seams permanently, creating a monolithic waterproof surface with no weak points.
Edge trims, drip edges and scupper details are installed to manage water runoff. All upstands are sealed to wall junctions. The completed deck is inspected and tested before handover.
Heat-welded seams create a completely seamless barrier. No water can penetrate to the structure below — protecting rooms, garages and living spaces underneath elevated decks.
Advanced UV stabilisers in the vinyl ensure colours remain vibrant even under Auckland's intense summer sun. No fading, cracking or chalking over time.
The embossed surface texture provides excellent grip in wet conditions. Safe for bare feet, perfect for pool areas, spa surrounds and exposed balconies.
Choose from a range of contemporary colours and wood-grain textures. From natural timber tones to modern greys, there's a Dec-K-Ing finish to suit every Auckland home.
Simply sweep and occasionally wash with mild detergent. No annual sealing, oiling or staining required — unlike natural timber decking that demands constant upkeep.
Professionally installed Dec-K-Ing systems last 15–20+ years. Combined with our workmanship warranty, it's a sound investment in your property.
When choosing a deck waterproofing system in Auckland, homeowners typically consider three main options: Dec-K-Ing, Butynol, and Liquid Membrane. Each has its place, but Dec-K-Ing offers unique advantages for decks that are used as living spaces.
Dec-K-Ing vs Butynol: Butynol provides excellent waterproofing but it's a flat, black rubber membrane — not a walking surface. Decks waterproofed with Butynol need tiles, timber, or artificial turf on top, adding cost and maintenance. Dec-K-Ing is the waterproofing and the finished surface, making it simpler and often more economical for living decks.
Dec-K-Ing vs Liquid Membrane: Liquid applied membranes work well for complex shapes but typically need a topcoat or protective layer for foot traffic. Dec-K-Ing\'s heavy-duty vinyl is designed for constant foot traffic, furniture loads and even vehicle access in some configurations.
When to choose Dec-K-Ing: It's the ideal choice when the deck is your outdoor living space — entertaining areas, BBQ zones, pool surrounds, rooftop terraces. If the deck needs to look good, feel comfortable underfoot, drain water effectively and protect the space below, Dec-K-Ing is the system we recommend.

Dec-K-Ing pricing in Auckland varies depending on the deck size, substrate condition, complexity of detailing and the colour/finish selected. As a general guide, a professionally installed Dec-K-Ing system typically ranges from $120–$180 per square metre including substrate preparation, membrane installation and all edge detailing.
While this is higher than a basic Butynol membrane installation, it's important to consider that Dec-K-Ing eliminates the need for a separate walking surface. When you factor in the cost of tiles, timber, or artificial turf over Butynol — plus the ongoing maintenance those surfaces require — Dec-K-Ing often works out to be comparable or even more economical over its lifetime.

Dec-K-Ing is a premium vinyl decking membrane system that provides a completely waterproof, anti-slip walking surface for outdoor decks, balconies and roof terraces. The heavy-duty vinyl sheet is mechanically fastened and heat-welded at every seam, creating a seamless barrier that prevents water from reaching the structure below.
When professionally installed, Dec-K-Ing systems typically last 15–20+ years in Auckland's maritime climate. The UV-stabilised vinyl resists fading and degradation from sun exposure, while the welded seams remain watertight through seasonal expansion and contraction cycles.
In many cases, yes. Dec-K-Ing can be installed over existing plywood substrates provided the timber is structurally sound and the surface is prepared correctly. We assess each deck individually — if the existing substrate has rot or significant damage, it will need replacing before Dec-K-Ing installation.
Dec-K-Ing is available in a range of contemporary colours and wood-grain finishes designed to complement New Zealand architecture. Popular choices in Auckland include natural timber tones, slate grey, and sandstone. All colours are UV-stabilised to resist fading.
While Butynol provides excellent waterproofing, it requires a separate walking surface (tiles or timber) on top. Dec-K-Ing combines waterproofing and the finished walking surface in one system — it is the surface. This makes it more cost-effective for decks, easier to maintain, and provides a more comfortable, attractive finish underfoot.
Yes. Dec-K-Ing features an embossed anti-slip texture that provides excellent grip even when wet. This makes it particularly suitable for pool surrounds, spa areas, and exposed decks that receive direct rainfall.
