What Is Dec-K-Ing?

Dec-K-Ing is a premium vinyl decking membrane system specifically engineered for outdoor decks, balconies, roof terraces and walkways. Unlike traditional waterproofing membranes that require a separate walking surface on top, Dec-K-Ing is the walking surface, combining complete waterproof protection with an attractive, comfortable and slip-resistant finish in a single product.

The system consists of heavy-duty PVC vinyl sheets that are mechanically fastened to the plywood substrate and heat-welded at every seam. This heat-welding process fuses the vinyl sheets together at a molecular level, creating a completely seamless, watertight barrier across the entire deck surface. There are no adhesive joints to fail, no grout lines to crack, and no gaps for water to penetrate.

In Auckland, where decks and balconies are exposed to UV radiation, salt air, and over 1,200mm of annual rainfall, Dec-K-Ing provides a reliable long-term solution. The vinyl is UV-stabilised to resist fading and degradation, while the embossed anti-slip texture ensures safe footing even during heavy rain. Substrate Preparation

The plywood deck is inspected for structural integrity. Any damaged or rotten timber is replaced. The surface is cleaned, levelled and primed to ensure proper adhesion and drainage falls.

Membrane Cutting & Fitting

Dec-K-Ing vinyl sheets are precision-cut to fit the deck layout, accounting for all penetrations, upstands, drainage outlets and edge details. Every piece is custom-fitted on site.

Heat Welding

The vinyl sheets are heat-welded together using specialist equipment at precisely controlled temperatures. This fuses the seams permanently, creating a monolithic waterproof surface with no weak points.

Detailing & Finishing

Edge trims, drip edges and scupper details are installed to manage water runoff. All upstands are sealed to wall junctions. The completed deck is inspected and tested before handover.

Dec-K-Ing vs Other Deck Waterproofing Systems

When choosing a deck waterproofing system in Auckland, homeowners typically consider three main options: Dec-K-Ing, Butynol, andLiquid Membrane. Each has its place, but Dec-K-Ing offers unique advantages for decks that are used as living spaces.

Dec-K-Ing vs Butynol: Butynol provides excellent waterproofing but it’s a flat, black rubber membrane, not a walking surface. Decks waterproofed with Butynol need tiles, timber, or artificial turf on top, adding cost and maintenance. Dec-K-Ing is the waterproofing and the finished surface, making it simpler and often more economical for living decks.

Dec-K-Ing vs Liquid Membrane: Liquid applied membranes work well for complex shapes but typically need a topcoat or protective layer for foot traffic. Dec-K-Ing’s heavy-duty vinyl is designed for constant foot traffic, furniture loads and even vehicle access in some configurations.

When to choose Dec-K-Ing: It’s the ideal choice when the deck is your outdoor living space, entertaining areas, BBQ zones, pool surrounds, rooftop terraces. If the deck needs to look good, feel comfortable underfoot, drain water effectively and protect the space below, Dec-K-Ing is the system we recommend.

What Drives the Cost of a Dec-K-Ing Deck

Dec-K-Ing is quoted per job, not per square metre, and the things that move the number are mostly underneath the vinyl rather than the vinyl itself.

Substrate condition. Dec-K-Ing needs a sound, smooth, correctly falling substrate. Sound plywood is ready to go. Soft or delaminated sheets have to be replaced, and a deck that does not fall to its outlets has to be corrected before anything goes down, because vinyl will not fix a drainage problem.

Detailing. Edges, upstands, door thresholds, posts, balustrade fixings and drainage outlets are where the labour sits and where decks leak. A simple rectangle with one outlet is fast. A deck with a balustrade fixed through the surface, two door thresholds and a change in level is not.

Access. Getting rolls and tools onto a ground floor deck beside a driveway is a different job from a second storey deck reached through the house.

Size. Setup and mobilisation are much the same on a small deck as a large one, so the fixed portion spreads across fewer metres on small jobs. Comparing a per-metre rate between two decks of different sizes is misleading.

Colour and finish. The range varies in price, and some finishes take longer to lay out cleanly where the deck is an unusual shape.

On comparing it with cheaper systems

Dec-K-Ing usually looks more expensive than a basic Butynol installation until you account for what sits on top. Butynol under tiles, timber or artificial turf needs that separate walking surface bought, installed and maintained, and every fixing through it is a potential leak. Dec-K-Ing is the membrane and the finished surface in one, so there is nothing penetrating it afterwards.

Can Dec-K-Ing be installed over an existing deck surface?

In many cases, yes. Dec-K-Ing can be installed over existing plywood substrates provided the timber is structurally sound and the surface is prepared correctly. We assess each deck individually, if the existing substrate has rot or significant damage, it will need replacing before Dec-K-Ing installation.
