How to Check a Waterproofing Contractor Is Certified

Waterproofing is one of the few trades where you cannot see the work once it is finished. The membrane goes under the deck, behind the cladding or below the ground, and by the time a fault shows up the water has usually been getting in for months. That is why certification matters more here than in most trades, and why it is worth checking before the job starts rather than after.

There are three things you can verify on any Auckland waterproofing contractor.

1. Are they a Licensed Building Practitioner, and with the right endorsement?

Waterproofing membrane installation is restricted building work under the Building Act 2004. It has to be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner holding the relevant endorsement, and an LBP number can be looked up on the public register. A general builder’s licence is not the same thing as a roofing endorsement.

2. Are they an approved applicator for the system they are quoting?

Manufacturer warranties on membrane systems are conditional. They generally apply only when the system is installed by a contractor that manufacturer has trained and certified. A contractor can quote you a premium membrane and still leave you with no manufacturer cover, because the cover was never theirs to give.

3. Is the certification current, and does it cover your specific system?

Approved applicator status is product-specific and has to be maintained. Being approved for one system does not mean being approved for every system. Ask which system is being quoted and whether the approval covers that exact product.

For property owners, hiring an approved applicator is the single most important step in protecting your waterproofing investment. Without an approved applicator, the manufacturer’s warranty on your membrane system is typically void, meaning if anything goes wrong with the membrane itself, you have no recourse to the manufacturer. Even the best waterproofing products can fail if installed incorrectly, and manufacturers only stand behind installations completed by contractors they have vetted and certified.

Nuralite / Nuraply Approved Applicator

Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP)
