Our Story

Your Subbie was founded by Matt Balkan, a Licensed Building Practitioner with deep experience in membrane waterproofing across Auckland. Matt holds LBP licence #BP181755 with Roofing Classes R4 and R5, covering the full scope of membrane roofing and waterproofing work as defined by the Building Act 2004.

The company was built on a simple principle: quality of execution matters more than low price. Waterproofing is one of the most critical elements of any building envelope — when it fails, the consequences are expensive and disruptive. We’ve seen firsthand what happens when waterproofing is installed cheaply or by unqualified operators, and we made a deliberate decision to focus on doing the job properly rather than competing on price.

Today, Your Subbie serves residential homeowners, builders, architects, property managers and body corporates across Auckland. We work on projects ranging from single residential decks to multi-unit commercial developments, applying the same standard of care and attention to detail regardless of project size.

Our Approach: Quality Over Price

We don’t compete to be the cheapest waterproofing company in Auckland. Instead, we compete to be the most reliable. Every project we complete is installed to manufacturer specifications, using approved products, with proper substrate preparation and detailed workmanship. This approach costs more upfront but saves homeowners significantly over the life of the membrane by avoiding premature failures and costly remedial work.

Our commitment to quality is why we are approved applicators for two of the most respected waterproofing manufacturers operating in New Zealand — Nuralite (Nuraply 3PM) and GAF. These approvals are not given lightly — manufacturers only approve applicators who consistently demonstrate the skill and professionalism required to install their systems to specification.

Why We Only Use Approved Systems

BRANZ (Building Research Association of New Zealand) independently tests and appraises building products for New Zealand conditions. When a membrane system carries BRANZ appraisal, it means it has been evaluated against rigorous performance criteria including weathertightness, durability, and compliance with the NZ Building Code.

We made a conscious decision to only install systems that have been independently certified or carry manufacturer backing from reputable companies. This protects our clients from the risk of unproven products failing prematurely, and ensures that warranty claims — if ever needed — are backed by established manufacturers rather than disappearing importers.

This also means we can provide genuine warranty coverage on both workmanship and materials, giving you confidence that your waterproofing investment is protected.
