Best Waterproofing Systems for New Zealand

An overview of the most commonly used waterproofing membrane systems across New Zealand.

Choosing the right waterproofing system is one of the most important decisions for any roof or deck waterproofing project. Each membrane system has different strengths, lifespans and applications.

Here is an overview of the most widely used waterproofing systems in New Zealand.

TPO Membrane Systems

TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) is a single-ply membrane that is heat-welded at the seams. It offers excellent UV resistance, energy efficiency and a long expected lifespan of 20–30 years.

TPO is commonly used for flat roofs, commercial buildings and new builds. The heat-welded seams provide a strong, continuous bond that is more reliable than adhesive-based systems.

Butynol Roofing Systems

Butynol is a rubber-based membrane that has been widely used across New Zealand for decades. It is BRANZ appraised and provides reliable waterproofing for residential and commercial roofs.

Butynol is applied using adhesive and typically lasts 15–25 years. It is a proven system that works well when professionally installed with proper seam detailing.

Torch-On Membranes

Torch-On (modified bitumen) membranes are applied using heat, creating a fused bond with the substrate. They are well suited to complex roof areas with multiple penetrations and changes in level.

Torch-On provides good puncture resistance and typically lasts 15–25 years. It is commonly used for commercial roofing and areas that need to withstand foot traffic.

Liquid Waterproofing Systems

Liquid membrane systems are applied as a coating that cures to form a seamless waterproof layer. They are ideal for intricate areas, penetrations and spaces where sheet membranes are difficult to install.

Liquid systems are often used for repairs, detailing work and smaller roof areas. They provide a fully seamless finish with no joints or seams.

Choosing the Right System

The best waterproofing system depends on the specific application, budget and expected lifespan requirements. A professional assessment is the best way to determine which system is right for your property.
